How Writing Daily Helped Me Publish My Debut Book
Before I start this post, I have a question: How many of you write daily?
Because when you read ahead you will start doing it.
My debut book ‘I Will Win Without War’ which gained appreciation from Bollywood Director Anurag Kashyap was the sole outcome of writing daily for a year. That’s it. That’s what it took me to complete the book which has now made me go places I never thought I was invited to. The book led me to meet people who have taught me more than any classroom, webinar, or workshop could teach.
I wrote the book when I was 22. You might say ‘Mmm…what could a 22-year-old write? It must be a poetry collection copied from some famous people on the internet. Or maybe a verse of multiple articles collugated and presented firmly. But, it is not! The book is an original idea; a concept that has gained applause from some of the finest reviewers and publishers in the publishing industry. And it all happened because I promised myself I would write something daily and make sure to complete the book in the same year.
When I say writing daily makes you better than average, I do not mean you will be Haruki Murakami, Sylvia Plath or Arundhati Roy after a year but you can surely be something that resonates with me. I did not graduate from the finest college in the country yet got my first internship with India’s biggest news channel. I did it all on my own because I wrote every day. And you know what helped the most? I knew I would write till the end of my life, every day. I will write shit and erase it and I will do that again till I know I have reached where I want to be. After writing the book and adding a few accolades to my career, I am just not a better writer. I am a better human being. From psychological to financial benefits, writing will always attract more to your life.
Here are a few more benefits of writing daily:
a. Thoughts: Our thoughts truly define us and writing daily improves the thought that crosses your mind, more than often. Whether it is a rant or something you have been trying to convey to someone, you can write it all before putting it out there. It unwinds your thoughts.
b. Happiness: Writing improves your mood and makes you happier(one of the key points every guru or philosopher teaches when asked about being happy is to journal or write).
c. Money: Whether you are into operations, sales, marketing or any other profession, your writing skills can always help you to earn that extra cash. You can choose freelance writing jobs and improve your finances.
d. Branding: People sitting at the top of the businesses always, apart from their core jobs, are writers or creatives. Not because they could not do that without writing, but because it adds to their brands. Writing inspires people who later join you in other forms of life. This is called developing a community. For example: Writing daily on a medium attracts people who like your opinion, and the things you share and helps in building a community.
Trust me when I say that writing daily will help you build something that lasts in the long term.
Keep writing, keep reading!
